mail as art or mail art as an artwork
June 25, 2003 10:15PM
<HTML>I was recently talking to another mail artist on the subject of art and mail art.

Following this conversation i was wondering if there was a general feeling about the following.....

Is the mail sent actually art, or is it the entirity of the mail art network that is the artwork?

I would appreciate reading your oppinions.

many thanks

Well, j.c., i would say it's the flow that is the mail art,
and the letting go of the art work;
sending it out;
forgetting about it;
going on to the next thing,
the next call, the next "message in a bottle" to friends you have never meet but are in the "network" with.
I guess I would agree with the second part of that statement.

<HTML>Im not exactly sure what you mean by 'letting go of the art work'

perhapse makinga n art work and sending it into the network, subjecting it to whatever decisions are made by receivers of the artwork. This could be a liberating experience possibly, abandoning the sense of the precious that we may have about pieces of art work. Im concious that with this idea it may be that the sender believes that they are sending and or exchanging works of art ?

Another idea may be that it is letting go of the ideas that we may have formed about art work, mail art being an antidote to art possibly ?
Questions of ownership and monetry value (to name two ideas associated to artworks) can be explored. perhapse here mail art is something that is not anti art, but simply something that itself (each individual sending) something that is not art itself, somethin that is questioning the nature of art itself.

<HTML>I'm not doing any mail art calls right now because my domicile is rather precarious (I may be moving soon) but I like the "message in a bottle" idea as an art call?
