<HTML>A copy of Ray Johnson's The Paper Snake, with an inchoate introduction by me, is being auctioned at eBay, with an opening bid about seventy dollars. The entry reads, in part, "Noted avante-garde artist, Ray Johnson, expresses in book form his philosphy of art including mail art.

Very fine condition from collection of an art curator. Dust jacket in fine shape with one very small tear on upper spine of DJ. Price of $3.47 on DJ. An excellent example of this rare book."

Anyone who buys this book at auction will receive by mail (or UPS) a book which is largely of mailart sent to Alison Knowles and Dick Higgins. The book has some aesthetic problems with the mechanical reproduction of colors, but increasingly it looms as a historical artifact conveying some of Ray's writing, and evidence of rather early Johnsonian mail-art. <HTML>As I say farewell forever, Merlin, I do want to point you toward your presumption in thinking that you have an explanation for the drowning of Ray Johnson: "...before he gave up jumping into
the Harbour!" As Shakespeare said, "What great ones do, the less will prattle of."

I posted a mention of a copy of The Paper Snake for sale at eBay because some mail-artists might want to connect with the historical origins of their network. The issue is not the auction of one book, but gratitude for a gift of aesthetic liveliness from Ray Johnson, who set in motion a process you participate in today, 42 years later. I think that your messageboard does well to appreciate the initial conditions of this Network which you have done so much to nurture. Bill Wilson</HTML>
